January - February 2004 Edition
The following was sent to me in response to a request for more information about our two newest members of A-1-8, SSgt’s Melvin Pagan and John Cutter both of who are currently in Iraq. Ken
“Hello, Mr. McCormack:
My name is SSG Melvin Pagan, and I just joined the A Co. 1-8 Infantry Chapter of the 4th ID Association. I'm writing a couple of lines to let you know a little bit about SSG Cutter and myself.
SSG John K. Cutter joined the Army in Jan 1997. He arrived at Ft. Carson and was assigned to A Co. 1-8 Infantry in May 2002. He is married and he and wife Christina have three children: Johnny, Megan and Dillon.
I've known SSG Cutter since 1998 when we served together in Baumholder, Germany.
I am originally from Puerto Rico. I joined the Army in August of 1986. I was assigned to A Co. 1-8 Infantry on 16 April 2001 as Unit Supply Sergeant. My wife Ivelisse and I have two children: Meliveshka, 12 yrs. old and Joshua,10.

We are both very honored to have joined the Association, and look forward to meeting everybody in person at the reunion in Atlantic City. Until then, nice to meet you and thanks for everything.”

No, SSgt. Pagan, it is we who are honored to have you as members and look forward to meeting you in person in Atlantic City!! We are interested in the sign behind you though. Are you receiving FREE beer for advertising? I did note that you are holding up your “Welcome to the Chapter” letters! Spread the word guys!

“War” Stories Needed
Last issue I reported that we are going to produce our own collection of short stories similar to “Utah Beach to Pleiku” but exclusively about us, A-1-8.
To date I have received only one story (Thank you Steve Benyshek) which begs the question; Where is everybody? Wake up guys. Here is a chance to leave a little something, a legacy, your story, for your kids and the rest of the world who do not really appreciate your service, what you did, or endured, for their freedom.
While I would prefer to receive it on disc or by e-mail to make it easier to deal with written manuscripts are welcome too (we will have them typed). So come on guys, lets have it. Tell us about your favorite buddies, worst day, best day, funniest day, favorite Sergeant or Officer, not so favorite Sergeant or Officer, whatever strikes your fancy…it’s all good. But write it down and send it!!!

Frank Wood
A-1-8 Vet Frank Wood, 61, of McCloud California lost his battle with cancer Jan. 26 at the Redding Medical Center. Time has accomplished what the North Vietnamese could not.
Born Oct. 11, 1942, in Yreka, he was a lifelong resident of Siskiyou County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a self-employed timber contractor, a member of the A-1-8 Chapter of the 4th Infantry Dfivision Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars in McCloud, American Legion 92 in McCloud, and a life long volunteer for youth sports.
Frank is survived by wife Priscilla; sons Brandon of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Dion of Happy Camp; daughter Kimberly Kent of Redding; brother Raymond of Salyer; sisters Frieda Titus of Medford, Ore., and Patricia Bailey of Penryn; and two grandchildren.
Frank attended his first A-1-8 reunion this past fall at Lake Tahoe and had urged all of us (men) to have a Prostate exam regularly as this was the source of his illness, which had spread to other areas. He really enjoyed himself and had said he would be seeing us all in Atlantic City in September.
Frank served with A-1-8 from July of 1967 through July 68. He arrived a specialist 4th class and left a Staff Sergeant. He served as a squad leader, platoon Sergeant and Platoon leader. It’s obvious from theses accomplishments in only one year that Frank was a first class soldier, a mans- man.
A donation to the Frank Wood Memorial Fund for Youth Sports has been sent in the name of the A-1-8 Chapter and members. Additional contributions can be made to any youth sports organization
